Australian Cancer Research Foundation
The Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is dedicated to helping find a cure for cancer through the continued support of world-class research in Australia.
Established in 1984 by the late Sir Peter Abeles, the Foundation has evolved into one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations. In 20 years we have awarded $55 million in grants to support leading edge Australian research initiatives, ensuring our country remains at the forefront of global cancer research. The Foundation is governed by an honorary Board of Trustees and is audited annually. Research grants, between $1.5 million and $10 million, are awarded each year, on the basis of scientific excellence.
All grants are subjected to a rigorous approval process overseen by our honorary Medical Research Advisory Committee, chaired by Professor Ian Frazer and featuring many of Australia’s most respected scientists and researchers.
The fight against cancer doesn’t come cheaply. The high-powered fluorescent microscopes used in current cell-based research, for example, are valued at more than $1 million, and the annual cost of treating cancer in Australia is more than $2 billion.

What makes ACRF different?
The ACRF is different from other cancer charities, in that we fund research only, and we finance facilities not provided for by State or federal governments. Thus, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) fills a vital gap in research funding in Australia. It is dedicated to finding a cure for this devastating disease which affects one in three Australians.
Our funded projects all have the potential to produce real breakthroughs for cancer patients.
With grants exceeding $1.5 million up to $10 million — money just not available from other private sources in Australia – the ACRF continues to significantly contribute significantly to drastic breakthroughs in the fight against cancer.
In just the last three years donations from generous Australian individuals and corporations have allowed us to fund almost $30 million in Australian cancer research projects which will see real breakthroughs in treatment, prevention and diagnosis.
More about ACRF’s results and our work
ACRF funding has made a real difference to the quality of life to patients with cancer, supporting the discovery of new ways to detect and treat the various cancers, which in turn have helped improve cancer survival rates and provided a clearer understanding of the characteristics that cause cells to become cancerous.
Cancer research funded through the Foundation includes breast and prostate cancer, bowel and colon cancer, children’s cancers, lung cancer, brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, lymphoma and leukemia, among others.
